Just a reminder early registration enables the school to do more accurate planning at an earlier date as well as provides our families with a break on the registration fee. Please take advantage of the break in the registration fee by registering early.

Freshmen Registration (Class of 2012) will be held on January 17 beginning at 7 p.m. All freshmen and their families who are registered by that date for the 2008-2009 school year should attend. Families may bring the completed registration card and fee that evening. Again, earlier registration is encouraged. The Principal and Guidance Director will provide an overview of the school curriculum that evening and guide our new families through the course selection process. Yes, it's that time of year when we all anxiously wait to spot those first few flakes of snow in the air! This is also the time of year when we anxiously wait to see or hear that wonderful/terrible announcement that school has been closed for the day. Here is some helpful information regarding the process of the closing the school due to inclement weather:
Since Northwest does not have any public school bussing, we are independent when it comes to the decision of whether to have school or not.
However, when a majority of the Oakland County school systems around us close, we will usually do the same.
We especially watch for Rochester, Avondale, Birmingham and Troy. When one of these systems closes, they usually all close. When Rochester closes, we USUALLY close, but it's NOT automatic.
There is then a second "layer" of school systems that we keep an eye on: Waterford, Pontiac, Clarkston, Oxford and some in the Lapeer, Livingston and Macomb Counties.
Northwest will always announce independent of any of these school systems. When we close it will be announced on Channel 2, 4, and 7; also, WJR-760 and WWJ-950. If Lutheran High Northwest is not announced, we're not closed. Parents can sign up for WWJ Newsradio 950's automatic personal alerts. Sign up and WWJ will send a personal alert of school closings and weather related events. Go to schoolclosed.com and click on "GetAlerts" for more information.
As a parent, you always have the option to hold your student out of school when the weather is bad. That absence, with your approval, is excused.
If a storm hits while we are in school, we only allow students to leave early if their parents have called us. We do not allow students to call home or parents' place of work to ask if they can leave early. Also, remember that students are not allowed to use their cell phones during school to call you.
This is a reminder that Lutheran Northwest operates a closed campus during lunch and after school. Students are not allowed to leave campus during the school day or after school while waiting to be picked up. Students should be picked up no later than 5:30 p.m. if they are not participating in a school co-curricular event. Students who are not picked up by this time will be subject to a nominal latchkey fee. NW does not give permission for students to leave the campus after school to walk to nearby stores. If you have any questions concerning this policy, please speak with Mr. Looker.
Remember that although we have final exams before Christmas vacation, first semester does not end until January 18.
Senior Ads are now being accepted for a very short time longer for the 2008 Yearbook. The deadline is Friday 11 January 2007. Please check the Lutheran Northwest website to download an Acrobat Information Sheet and an Acrobat Order Form. If you are not able to meet this deadline, please contact Mr. Prechel immediately either at dprechel@lhsa.com or at 248-852-6677 to reserve space. Please contact Mr. Prechel if you have any other questions either at dprechel@lhsa.com or at 248-852-6677.
This is a very IMPORTANT meeting! Many issues regarding our children's senior year and graduation will be discussed with Mr. Looker. At that time the Senior All Night Party information will be handed out and you may purchase tickets that night - SO BRING YOUR CHECKBOOKS!! See the Parent Network section for more information.
Commencement ceremonies for the Class of 2008 will be held on Tuesday, June 3, 2008 at 7:00 p.m., at Faith Lutheran Church in Troy (16 Mile and Dequindre).
Courtesy Driving School will hold Segment I and Segment II classes here, starting January 21and January 23 respectively. Enrollment forms and information are in the school office, or call Courtesy Driving School at 800-256-9559.
Spiritwear is available at many home games throughout the year and also can be ordered in the school office. Val Wolgast is the Spiritwear coordinator this year and has put together a catalogue and order forms that can be seen in the school office. If you have any questions, Val can be contacted at 248-585-4775.
LHNW will receive $2.00 per cartridge from Recycle Inc.com - a great cost-free fundraiser. Just place your used cartridges in a "ziplock" - style sandwich bag and bring them to the school office. Proceeds will benefit the Athletic Programs. Be sure to ask relatives, neighbors, and friends to save them - and don't forget those office printers. (*Please note Epson and previously recycled cartridges are not accepted)
Lutheran Northwest has been blessed financially through the generosity of our friends at Thrivent Financial. During this school year alone, the Southeast Oakland, North Oakland, and West Oakland Chapters of Thrivent Financial have donated over $15,000 in matching funds! Lutheran High Northwest wishes to thank all Thrivent members and also the representatives from those chapters who have so generously supported our mission.
Reminder: If you are a Thrivent member, please call the school office to find out how to maximize any gift you make to Lutheran Northwest.
The Ceramics classes will be hosting one of St. John Fraser's Lenten soup dinners on March 5 as an Empty Bowls Dinner for Charity. Basically, the students are making a bunch of bowls that people will "buy" by donation. They can either eat dinner out of the bowl they buy or I would have some Styrofoam or school owned bowls to use if they don't want to get their bowl dirty. I am told to expect about 300-400 people for the dinner. I am trying to line up some sponsors who would donate money, soup, bread, butter, maybe utensils, and whatever else we will need. All of our profits will be donated to the MCREST program at St. John Fraser that helps provide the homeless with food, clothing and shelter. Obviously, the more donations we can get, the more money can go toward MCREST. Would you have any food/business contacts that might be willing to contribute? If you would be willing to contribute contact information, money, time or materials to our cause, please contact Mr. Davis. Thank you in advance for your assistance in helping us show God's love to others who are in need.
God's Blessings,
Jeff Davis

...To Jennifer Lee Joseph, Dan and Marcia Dorman, Cheryl Schiller, and Kim Davis who came and helped me, Pat Raezler, set up for the Teacher's Christmas reception; and to Dan and Marcia Dorman, Cheryl Schiller, Kim Davis, Jennifer Lee Joseph, Dianna Van Gorden and Diane Davis, who also stayed on or came after to help clean up! Not only that, but these ladies also brought goodies! I certainly could not have done it without their expert help! The Library looked very festive and the food was great! In addition to the ladies listed above, many people donated food, drinks, or goods. Many thanks to all of you! I know our teachers appreciated that extra touch of love from our Northwest family. Each teacher received $100 in Scrip from their choice of provider, as well as a special mug, which was inscribed, "Thanking God for your servant heart..." all gifts from your Parent Network.
I am only one, but I am one.
I cannot do everything, but I can do something.
And because I cannot do everything,
I will not
refuse to do the something that I can do.
What I can do, I should do.
And what I should do, by the grace of God, I will do

Please join us at Parent Network this year.
Cheryl Schiller was named LHNW Lutheran Woman of the Year. Cheryl has headed our Rummage Sale for two years, was the head of the Homecoming Reception for two years, and was this year's LHSA Auction Chair. Cheryl will be honored at a luncheon for all the Lutheran Women of the Year at the Burton Manor on January 15. Congratulations, Cheryl! We will miss her next year as her son graduates in June...but I got her for one more event--co-chairing the chaperone committee for the Senior All Night Party!
Mr. Looker will be sharing important information regarding our children's senior year including graduation. At that time the Senior ALL Night Party information will be handed out, and you may purchase tickets that night - SO BRING YOUR CHECKBOOKS!! Danielle Katner has graciously offered to do the senior video. Please see the information below for what pictures are needed.
As you may know, one of the gifts the seniors receive at the Senior All Night Party is a video, which includes pictures of all the seniors as babies, the "senior" picture, and various memory pictures through the years. Danielle Katner, a 2004 LHNW graduate and current cheerleading coach, has graciously offered to do the video. We need you, parents of seniors, to begin now to send in one baby picture, one senior picture, and any other pictures you have from events at Northwest...sports teams, dances, clubs, hall pictures, etc. from all four years! You can send hard copies into the office with attention to Danielle Katner. She will scan them and return them to the office for pick up. You can also e-mail them to her at dkatner@oakland.edu.
More than you may think! While we charge the seniors a nominal amount for the tickets, which generates between $3,000 and $3,800, the actual cost to put on the event is over $7,000. Included in that figure are costs for renting the YMCA, decorations, postage, food and drinks, video production, senior class photo and frames, mailings for donations and more postage, and senior gifts.
Our dedicated Donations committee sends out hundreds of solicitation letters begging for money! We have run some fundraisers, like serving lunches to the kids, and a Bowling event.
Do you own a company? You can give us a tax-deductible donation! You can make an individual donation! How about donating some food for the kids? Or you can help like Tim and Patty Kaiser from Kaiser Studios did 4 years ago and donated the cost of the senior group photo and bought the frames for all 64 graduates as well! Or you can buy gift cards (use SCRIP!) and donate them for the senior gift! Want to help? Call Denise Katner at 248-475-0889, or Pat Raezler at 248-641-3876. Denise and Pat are the Co-General Chairmen for this year's event.
We are offering a special savings for early bird buyers:
October 1 - Jan 10 - $50
Jan.11- March 31 - $60
After April 1st - $75
The S.S. CRUSADER sails June 3 (graduation night) at 10:00 p.m. Tickets may be purchased in the school office from Chief Purser, Mrs. Baldwin.
The next meeting is Monday, January 21 at 7:00 p.m.
Senior, Junior, Sophomore, and Freshman parents - WE NEED YOUR HELP!!! It is never too late. Come join the crew of the S.S. Crusader as we continue to plan for this fun filled evening to honor our graduating seniors. You ALL will have seniors one day but if you join now you'll have experience and fun meeting other Northwest parents. We need many hands to make our deck shine!!
This year the SANP committee is looking for donations of gift cards. We do not do large items so we are looking to give the seniors cards to places they could use. Ideas include: gas cards, restaurants, video rental, coffee cards, 7-Eleven (those slurpees go over big). AND you could use SCRIP to order some of these and benefit yourself while benefiting others. Call Denise Katner at 248-475-0889 with questions.
Patti Jacques, a mother of a freshman, has offered to head this very important ministry., which continues to meet every Friday at 1:40 p.m. in the Lutheran High School Association Board room (located across from Mr. Weber's room or use the entrance opposite the girl's softball field off Bagley.... it will save you a lot of walking!) If the time needs to be adjusted, Patti is willing to make changes. Prayer is an awesome means to intercede for the school, its students and families. The results are amazing...why not join up... you can come when your schedule allows
Our golf outing was way off of our expectations. Last year we made $17,680.16: this year we are at $6,613.30 with (hopefully) some matching funds from Thrivent. However, with our commitment to the Association for $8,000, this leaves little available for school improvement. In your back to school packets I included a form which would allow you to make a financial contribution to the Golf Outing, if you were unable to attend. Few people responded; in fact, we collected only $440--with one donation of $300--meaning the rest of the 200 families donated $140. I AM SURE that this was an oversight! We have wonderful families at Northwest who want to see the school improve and the facility updated. In the past we have purchased the library furniture, new chairs in the music room, projection equipment, music stands, a new refrigerator, new stove and the new sign out front! There is much that still needs to be done, and if every family would donate just $20 we would have an additional $4,000! If you have any other ideas for fundraisers, please e-mail me at sanibela4@hotmail.com or call me at 248-641-3876 (Pat Raezler).
You can save money on tuition and even help the school with this easy continuous fundraiser. Call Janine Runey (248) 650-8550 for the details. Forms are available in the office.
These are also easy ways to help the school. A portion of the profits from these stores is returned to the school. You just need to designate Lutheran High Northwest as your school of choice.
Join us on Monday, January 7 at 7:00 p.m. and Monday, February 4 at 7:00 p.m. (always the first Monday of each month unless there is a special event or holiday!)
