Lutheran High School Northwest is committed to equip students for a life of Christian service through a curriculum of academic excellence, encouraged through a caring Christ-centered environment where God's word is shared daily.

2008-2009 Registration

Just a reminder early registration enables the school to do more accurate planning at an earlier date as well as provides our families with a break on the registration fee. Registration cards for the 2008-2009 school year were sent home with your child's 1st quarter report cards. If you need another, more are available in the school office. Please take advantage of the break in the registration fee by registering early.

The following is the registration fee schedule:

$250.00 By June 30, 2008

$300.00 By August 15, 2008

$350.00 After August 15, 2008

Families interested in applying for financial aid should register as soon as possible and request a financial aid form from the school office. The school and Association are willing to work with families where finances are a concern. Please contact the school office with any registration related questions or concerns.

Thank you, Parent Network

To all the parents who donated time, talents, and treasure to the Teacher Appreciation week, thank you from the entire faculty and staff of Lutheran High Northwest! We are truly blessed to be a part of this ministry. Your efforts have uplifted us in this ministry. It is definitely hard to imagine a Christian ministry without the kind of support and encouragement that is provided by our families. God bless you!

School Closings

Yes, it's that time of year when we all anxiously wait to spot those first few flakes of snow in the air! This is also the time of year when we anxiously wait to see or hear that wonderful/terrible announcement that school has been closed for the day. Here is some helpful information regarding the process of the closing the school due to inclement weather:

  1. Since Northwest does not have any public school bussing, we are independent when it comes to the decision of whether to have school or not.

  2. However, when a majority of the Oakland County school systems around us close, we will usually do the same.

  3. We especially watch for Rochester, Avondale, Birmingham and Troy. When one of these systems closes, they usually all close. When Rochester closes, we USUALLY close, but it's NOT automatic.

  4. There is then a second "layer" of school systems that we keep an eye on: Waterford, Pontiac, Clarkston, Oxford and some in the Lapeer, Livingston and Macomb Counties.

  5. Northwest will always announce independent of any of these school systems. When we close it will be announced on Channel 2, 4, and 7; also, WJR-760 and WWJ-950. If Lutheran High Northwest is not announced, we're not closed. Parents can sign up for WWJ Newsradio 950's automatic personal alerts. Sign up and WWJ will send a personal alert of school closings and weather related events. Go to schoolclosed.com and click on "GetAlerts" for more information.

  6. As a parent, you always have the option to hold your student out of school when the weather is bad. That absence, with your approval, is excused.

If a storm hits while we are in school, we only allow students to leave early if their parents have called us. We do not allow students to call home or parents' place of work to ask if they can leave early. Also, remember that students are not allowed to use their cell phones during school to call you.

Student Pick Up

This is a reminder that Lutheran Northwest operates a closed campus during lunch and after school. Students are not allowed to leave campus during the school day or after school while waiting to be picked up. Students should be picked up no later than 5:30 p.m. if they are not participating in a school co-curricular event. Students who are not picked up by this time will be subject to a nominal latchkey fee. NW does not give permission for students to leave the campus after school to walk to nearby stores. If you have any questions concerning this policy, please speak with Mr. Looker.

Save Those Printer Cartridges!

LHNW will receive $2.00 per cartridge from Recycle Inc.com - a great cost-free fundraiser. Just place your used cartridges in a "ziplock" - style sandwich bag and bring them to the school office. Proceeds will benefit the Athletic Programs. Be sure to ask relatives, neighbors, and friends to save them - and don't forget those office printers. (*Please note: Epson and previously recycled cartridges are not accepted)

LHNW Spiritwear

Spiritwear is available at many home games throughout the year and also can be ordered in the school office. Val Wolgast is the Spiritwear coordinator this year and has put together a catalogue and order forms that can be seen in the school office. If you have any questions, Val can be contacted at 248-585-4775.

Thrivent Matching

Lutheran Northwest has been blessed financially through the generosity of our friends at Thrivent Financial. During this school year alone, the Southeast Oakland, North Oakland, and West Oakland Chapters of Thrivent Financial have donated over $15,000 in matching funds! Lutheran High Northwest wishes to thank all Thrivent members and also the representatives from those chapters who have so generously supported our mission.

Reminder: If you are a Thrivent member, please call the school office to find out how to maximize any gift you make to Lutheran Northwest.

Ceramics Classes to Host Charity Dinner - Help Needed

The Ceramics classes will be hosting one of St. John Fraser's Lenten soup dinners on March 5 as an Empty Bowls Dinner for Charity. Basically, the students are making a bunch of bowls that people will "buy" by donation. They can either eat dinner out of the bowl they buy or I would have some Styrofoam or school owned bowls to use if they don't want to get their bowl dirty. I am told to expect about 300-400 people for the dinner. I am trying to line up some sponsors who would donate money, soup, bread, butter, maybe utensils, and whatever else we will need. All of our profits will be donated to the MCREST program at St. John Fraser that helps provide the homeless with food, clothing and shelter. Obviously, the more donations we can get, the more money can go toward MCREST. Would you have any food/business contacts that might be willing to contribute? If you would be willing to contribute contact information, money, time or materials to our cause, please contact Mr. Davis. Thank you in advance for your assistance in helping us show God's love to others who are in need.

God's Blessings,

Jeff Davis

The choir tour will finish with a Home Concert at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Birmingham at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 9.

Michigan Merit Exam: Juniors to Receive Free ACT Test March 11-March 13

Northwest will be administering the new Michigan Merit Exam (MME), which will include a free ACT test for high school juniors.

The MME replaces the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) assessments. It will provide students with a regular ACT score report that they can use to apply to a college or a university. Students also will be able to use the MME to qualify for the Michigan Promise Award scholarship (previously the Michigan Merit Award) to help pay for their costs in attending a state college.

The MME is made up of the national ACT and WorkKeys tests in mathematics and reading, plus additional Michigan assessments in the areas of mathematics, science, and social studies. MME testing is divided into three parts. The ACT will be administered on March 11 2008 while the WorkKeys and Michigan mathematics tests will be administered on March 12, 2008. The Michigan science and social studies tests will be given on March 13. There are no make-ups for these tests at Northwest. You will have to wait until nest spring to make it up.

College Tuition Rewards Program

If you have a child who is not yet through the 10th grade, come to LHNW on Monday, April 7 at 7 p.m. to hear Bill Duggan from the Covenant College Funding Services present information about their Tuition Rewards Program. This financial aid program is an investment toward your child's eventual college tuition, and by participating, you can reduce the cost of sending your child to a variety of four-year private colleges and universities in thirty-three states. Your child does NOT need to be in high school to qualify for this program, and you can earn 500 tuition points just by attending the presentation! If you are interested in coming to hear Mr. Duggan, please call LHNW at (248) 852-6677 and reserve your spot today!

Career Fair

On Friday, April 25, 2008, Lutheran Northwest will be holding a career fair for students. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to learn about different job paths, and it is also a great chance for parents to get involved. If you are interested in giving a presentation about your career or would like to set up a table with information about your job, please contact Kelly Fink or Karen Carson at (248) 852-6677, kfink@lhsa.com, or Carson.Karen@gmail.com by Friday, March 14.

Selective Service Announcement

All gentlemen turning 18 must register with the Selective Service System. This does not mean that you have signed up for the military. If you do not register you may put any possible scholarships in jeopardy. You can register online at: www.sss.gov.

ATHLETICS

Please see the school web site, www.lhnw.lhsa.com, for schedules for the spring sports teams; click on Athletics, then the link to www.highschoolsports.net. for the most up-to-date information.

Spring Sports

Spring sports will be starting Monday, March 10. Please check www.highschoolsports.net for times. Times for the first couple weeks will fluctuate. Please check each day separately, and prepare transportation for your student athlete as close to the end of practice as possible. Practice buses will be available until after cuts. At the time of cuts we will determine how many kids would use the bus, to determine if we need one for the spring season. Bus times will be listed on the web site, www.highschoolsports.net as well.

Spring sports season is also a time where game times change A LOT! You can get immediate changes e-mailed to you wherever you are by registering at www.highschoolsports.net. Whatever sports you register for, every change will be sent to you as it is entered in the computer.

Euchre Tournament ~ Saturday, March 15

Mark your calendars! Saturday, March 15, at the Knights of Columbus in Clawson will be the 4th Annual Euchre Tournament. We have many projects we would like to complete, and this money goes directly to them. We would like to add a concession stand in the gymnasium, a fence in the baseball field, put a sound system in the gymnasium, and many other things. Your money is matched by our Thrivent organizations and can turn this night into a great fundraiser! Our stipend is paid to the LHSA, so all proceeds will go directly to our athletic boosters to continue to work with our athletic facilities and items for teams.

Tickets are available in the office for $30 each. There will be pizza served, desserts at the end, a cash bar, and a silent auction featuring Pistons signed jerseys and many other items. This will be a great opportunity to play some cards and have a great time; so bring a friend and introduce them to our LHNW family.

Athletic Banquet

Our All-Sport Athletic Banquet will be held Thursday, May 29 at the San Marino Club in Troy. Tickets will be available in the office. This year we will honor our "Athletes of the Year". Students who are nominated will get invitations; however, that is not all we are doing that evening. Lem Barney will speak after the dinner. We will have a program and highlights of the past athletic school year. We would love to see all who were involved in athletics at the banquet. Mark your calendars and get ready for a great evening.

Sports Physicals

It may seem early, but beginning April 15 you can get your sports physical for the 2008-2009 school year. Get them set up now so we don't have the crunch at the end of the summer trying to get them done and turned in. The official start date for fall sports will be Monday, August 11. Although there will be things going on before that, physicals must be turned in before you will be allowed to try out for a sport. It may be 11 degrees out now, but August will be here before you know it!!

Note: Physicals are also required for students taking PE classes and for anyone participating in the powder puff games during homecoming.

BIG THANK YOU

...To Joyce Ogilvie for organizing the Teacher Appreciation week, which was the last week of February. Thanks for all your hard work, Joyce. You are a gem...all I had to do was answer questions...you took the project and made it your own! You are amazing!

...To all the parents who donated goods, money, and/or their time to make our wonderful teachers feel special during "Teacher Appreciation" week. You are wonderful!

...To Bob Quigley, Parent Network Treasurer. It sure is nice having another male figure attending our meetings and keeping Mr. Looker company! Thank you for organizing our books and being an awesome treasurer.

To Carrie Vel, Secretary for the PN, for being an over the top secretary, the unquestionable head of the Crusader Golf outing, and chair of the Senior All Night Party fundraising lunches.... and making the lunches! Your smiles brighten up the room at ALL our meetings.

...To Laura Quigley, our retired Secretary but still faithful member... the person who organizes all those volunteer sheets in the fall, served faithfully on the Golf Outing committee for the last 2 years, and is Treasurer for the Senior All Night Party. She was also Joyce Ogilvie's right hand person for the teacher appreciation week. You are my angel...still.

...To Kim Davis, PN President, whose love for the school is undeniable and her dedication unquestionable. Thank you for all you do.

...To Julie Summers who has stepped up to help us in several areas, including serving on the Golf Outing Committee. Thank you for your generosity, Julie!

NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION -

I am only one, but I am one.
I cannot do everything, but I can do something.
And because I cannot do everything, I will not
refuse to do the something that I can do. What I
 can do, I should do.
And what I should do, by the grace of God, I will do
~~ Edward Everett

PARENT NETWORK OFFICERS POSITION OPEN FOR 2008-2010 TERM -

This year the positions of Parent Network Vice - President and Treasurer are up for election. I (Pat Raezler) will no longer be available to be the VP. Our last child, Stephanie, will be graduating in June, so someone needs to take my position. What a great opportunity to serve the school and make Northwest a better place! Also, Bob Quigley is heading the Booster Club, and so would like to relinquish his duties as Treasurer. If you are interested in either position, please call Pat Raezler at 248-641-3876 or e-mail her at sanibela4@hotmail.com or contact Laura Quigley who is heading the nominating committee. Call her at 248-651-5299.

DONATIONS FOR THE SENIOR ALL NIGHT PARTY-

This year the SANP committee is looking for donations of gift cards. Because we will be at the Oakland YMCA, we cannot do large items; so, we are looking to give the seniors gift cards to places they could use. Ideas include: gas cards, restaurants, video rental, coffee cards, 7-Eleven (those slurpees go over big). AND you could use SCRIP to order some of these and benefit yourself while benefiting others. Call Denise Katner, SANP Chairman at 248-379-1706 or Pat Raezler, SANP Co-Chair at 248-641-3876.

SENIOR ALL NIGHT PARTY TICKETS ON SALE NOW

We are offering a special savings for early bird buyers:

SENIOR ALL NIGHT PARTY MEETING - WE NEED YOU!!!

The next meeting is at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, March 17 at the OAKLAND YMCA, located at 3378 E. Walton Blvd. Auburn Hills 48326 near Oakland University. Time is getting short...

Senior, Junior, Sophomore, and Freshman parents - WE NEED YOUR HELP!!! It is never too late. Come join the crew of the S.S. Crusader as we continue to plan for this fun filled evening to honor our graduating seniors. You ALL will have seniors one day but if you join now you'll have experience and fun meeting other Northwest parents. We need many hands to make our deck shine!!

FUNDRAISING LUNCHES - CAN YOU HELP?

The SANP raises money through various fundraisers, one of which is the SANP lunches. There's an opportunity in April to help serve lunch on April 30. If you can help, please contact Carrie Vel Berry at 586-726-3286. Thank you!

SENIOR PARENTS, WE NEED PICTURES!!

As you may know, one of the gifts the seniors receive at the Senior All Night Party is a video, which includes pictures of all the seniors as babies, the "senior" picture, and various memory pictures through the years. Danielle Katner, a 2004 LHNW graduate and current cheerleading coach, has graciously offered to do the video. We need you, parents of seniors, to begin now to send in one baby picture, one senior picture, and any other pictures you have from events at Northwest...sports teams, dances, clubs, hall pictures, etc. from all four years! You can send hard copies into the office with attention to Danielle Katner. She will scan them and return them to the office for pick up. You can also e-mail them to her at dkatner@oakland.edu.

MOMS IN TOUCH

Patti Jacques, a mother of a freshman, has offered to head this very important ministry. This group meets every Friday at 1:40 p.m. in the Lutheran High School Association Board room located across from Mr. Weber's room. (You can use the entrance opposite the girl's softball field off Bagley.... it will save you a lot of walking!) If the time needs to be adjusted, Patti is willing to make changes. Prayer is an awesome means to intercede for the school, its students and families. The results are amazing...why not join up... you can come when your schedule allows

SCRIP

You can save money on tuition and even help the school with this easy continuous fundraiser.  All Scrip ordering is now done online; see the instructions on the Northwest web site for the details about setting up an account with a user ID and password.  Call Debbie Sidelinker at 248-682-6924 if you have questions.

Target and Gordon Food Service

These are also easy ways to help the school. A portion of the profits from these stores is returned to the school. You just need to designate Lutheran High Northwest as your school of choice.

FUTURE PARENT NETWORK MEETINGS

Join us on Monday, March 3 at 7:00 p.m. and Monday, April 7 (always the first Monday of each month
