Just a reminder early registration enables the school to do more accurate planning at an earlier date as well as provides our families with a break on the registration fee. Please take advantage of the break in the registration fee by registering early.

Families interested in applying for financial aid should register as soon as possible and request a financial aid form from the school office. All incoming freshmen and transfer students for the 2008-2009 school year must have a physical done before the school year begins, but after April 15, 2008, as required by state law. Included with this physical must be a listing of all immunizations your student has received, signed by your health care professional.
All students participating in sports, P. E. classes, or the homecoming powder puff games must have physicals done between April 15, 2008 and the first practice of the sport/event you are participating in, or the first day of school if you are taking a P.E. class next school year.
Now that it's spring, we can start adding new paver bricks to our beautiful Crusader Walk. Anyone can purchase a brick and have it engraved; just fill out the Crusader Walk Brick Order Form available in the school office. It has become somewhat of a tradition for parents to honor their graduating senior with a paver brick. Here are some other popular ideas:
Parents, honor your graduating senior!
Family name
Dedicate a brick to a favorite relative, teacher, pastor, etc.
Memorials
Bible verse
Commencement ceremonies for the Class of 2008 will be held on Tuesday, June 3, 2008 at 7:00 p.m., at Faith Lutheran Church in Troy (16 Mile and Dequindre).
Turn your spring-cleaning junk into valuable dollars for our school! Consider donating your old "stuff" to raise money for LHNW through the Project 12 Baskets Program. This program turns your old stuff into money for projects around our school through posting it in online auctions. LHNW receives 70% of the profits for each item donated. The Art Department has had great success so far turning donated items into $600. We are still looking to raise an additional $2400 toward the purchase of a badly needed new kiln for the Ceramics classes, hopefully before next school year. Help make this a reality! Contact Mr. Davis for additional details, or contact / donate directly at www.project12baskets.com. Just go to "Charities" and find LHNW. Click on "more information" and scroll down to the "New Kiln for Art Dept" link. Click on "donate items to support this initiative" and deal with 12 Baskets directly. They will pick up items from the school or from your home. It's a great easy way to support your programs here at LHNW!
Mr. Davis
Lutheran Northwest has been blessed financially through the generosity of our friends at Thrivent Financial. During this school year alone, the Southeast Oakland, North Oakland, and West Oakland Chapters of Thrivent Financial have donated over $15,000 in matching funds! Lutheran High Northwest wishes to thank all Thrivent members and also the representatives from those chapters who have so generously supported our mission.
Reminder: If you are a Thrivent member, please call the school office to find out how to maximize any gift you make to Lutheran Northwest.
This is a reminder that Lutheran Northwest operates a closed campus during lunch and after school. Students are not allowed to leave campus during the school day or after school while waiting to be picked up. Students should be picked up no later than 5:30 p.m. if they are not participating in a school co-curricular event. Students who are not picked up by this time will be subject to a nominal latchkey fee. NW does not give permission for students to leave the campus after school to walk to nearby stores. If you have any questions concerning this policy, please speak with Mr. Looker.
Spiritwear is available at many home games throughout the year and also can be ordered in the school office. Val Wolgast is the Spiritwear coordinator this year and has put together a catalogue and order forms that can be seen in the school office. If you have any questions, Val can be contacted at 248-585-4775
Seniors interested in retaking the ACT and/or taking the SAT Tests need to apply for them according to the chart below.
The school Code is 231-408. You may apply online or pick up forms at school.
Check out these websites: www.act.org or www.collegeboard.com.
Juniors took the ACT test as part of the Michigan Merit Exam in March.

Registration packages for both exams may be picked up in the Guidance Area at school or you may apply online at www.actstudent.org for the ACT Exam and www.collegeboard.com for the SAT.
Remember to check the guidance page on the Website to review the sources for college help.
Seniors should complete and mail in their applications to their college choices. Some schools will stop accepting applications soon and you may miss out on attending the college you want.
All gentlemen turning 18 must register with the Selective Service System. This does not mean that you have signed up for the military. If you do not register you may put any possible scholarships in jeopardy. You can register online at: www.sss.gov.
Please see the school web site, www.lhnw.lhsa.com, for schedules and rosters for the spring sports teams; click on Athletics, then the link to www.highschoolsports.net. for the most up-to-date information.
Spring sports are in full swing now. Please check www.highschoolsports.net for times of practices and games. Please check each day separately, and prepare transportation for your student athlete as close to the end of practice as possible. Practice buses will be available on a day-by-day basis. Please check each day. When we have a couple of games going on, we don't have enough kids riding to be able to justify the expense. Bus times will be listed on the web site, www.highschoolsports.net as well.
Spring sports season is also a time where game times change A LOT! You can get immediate changes e-mailed to you wherever you are by registering at www.highschoolsports.net. Whatever sports you register for, every change will be sent to you as it is entered in the computer.
Our All-Sport Athletic Banquet will be held Thursday, May 29 at the San Marino Club in Troy. This year we will honor our "Athletes of the Year". Students who are nominated will get invitations; however, that is not all we are doing that evening. Lem Barney will speak after the dinner. We will have a program and highlights of the past athletic school year. We would love to see all who were involved in athletics at the banquet. Mark your calendars and get ready for a great evening. Reservations will be $16.00 per person up until May 23rd, after that the price jumps to $20 per person. Athletes have to pay for a ticket as well. Reservations can be made in the office.
It may seem early, but beginning April 15 you can get your sports physical for the 2008-2009 school year. Get them set up now so we don't have the crunch at the end of the summer trying to get them done and turned in. The official start date for fall sports will be Monday, August 11. Although there will be things going on before that, physicals must be turned in before you will be allowed to try out for a sport. It may be 11 degrees out now, but August will be here before you know it!!
Note: Physicals are also required for students taking PE classes and for anyone participating in the powder puff games during homecoming.
Thank you to Patti Jacques who has faithfully prayed for our school, students, teachers, staff, administration, and families. Want to know why LHNW is such a great place--it IS the MOMS IN TOUCH prayer group.
Thank you to Debbie Sidelinker who has taken on the SCRIP program!
Thank you to Julie Summers who has agreed to take over the Parent Network newsletter from the Vice-President!
As we near the end of the school year, I would like to thank all those who volunteered to help at LHNW. Your efforts are deeply appreciated and help make our school a family. Thank you one and all!
For you parents who need information to talk to your kids, this is it. The following came from the Family Research Council:
"Mounting research suggests that heavy drinking by teens may have greater neurological consequences than previously thought. A recent article in The New York Times notes that even when genetic risks for alcoholism are taken into account, 47 percent of those who begin drinking before the age of 14 become alcohol dependent at some time in their lives, compared with nine percent of those who wait at least until age 21. "We definitely didn't know 5 or 10 years ago that alcohol affected the teen brain differently," says psychiatry professor Dr. Aaron White. "Now there's a sense of urgency. It's the same place we were in when everyone realized what a bad thing it was for pregnant women to drink alcohol." In recent years other studies have shown that teen drinking starts at an earlier age and that nearly 12 percent of all alcohol sold in the United States is consumed by minors. Much of the increase can be attributed to the way in which the media glamorize heavy drinking, especially on television where alcohol is the most common beverage shown. But parents can have the most significant impact on teen drinking. Helping kids to see that media portrayals of alcohol are misleading can help them to think about the issue - and avoid mistakes at an especially vulnerable point in their development." Additional information can be obtained by going to the following link, an article written in the New York Times entitled, "Grim Neurology of Teenage Drinking" - http://www.nytimes.com/2006/07/04/health/04teen.html
And in case you did not know it, it is against the law to serve minors alcohol. Do not assume that parents do not care whether their children drink as minors. I for one DO care and resent those parents who think it is OK. The legal age for drinking in this state is 21...there are no exceptions, period.
We are in need of someone who would be willing to volunteer to co-chair this final "thank you" to our teachers for the 2007-2008 school year. We already have volunteers to help. Please call Pat Raezler to volunteer - 248- 641-3876.
Thanks to our nominating committee and some arm-twisting, we are happy to report that Patti Jacques has agreed to return as Vice-President and Barb Friedel has agreed to take on the position of Treasurer. The slate will be voted on at the June meeting. Thank you girls!
As a result of the Senior All Night Party committee's planning and suggestion, we will be continuing the tradition of providing a reception following the graduation ceremony at Faith Church. Junior parents will help host a dessert and refreshment reception at Faith Lutheran Church in Troy. Andrea Schlak, Kim Davis, Val Wolgast, and Tina Conte have graciously offered to head this committee, but they need some friendly volunteers. If you can help with this reception, please call Andrea at 248-792-2045. Look for a letter from Andrea and crew in the mail soon....if you have not already received it!
SENIOR ALL NIGHT PARTY TICKETS ARE AVAILABLE for $75. The S.S. CRUSADER sails June 3 (graduation night) at 10:30 p.m. Tickets may be purchased in the school office from Chief Purser, Mrs. Baldwin.
The next meeting is Monday, May 19, at 7:00 p.m. There is still time to come and help!!!!
The following committees need workers for Tuesday, June 3 at the Oakland YMCA:
Three chaperones are needed for the 2 a.m. to 5:30 a.m. shift. To volunteer, call Karen Pridmore at 248-568-3676 or e-mail me (Pat Raezler) at sanibela4@hotmail.com. Come on and have some fun; last year our first shift chaperones didn't want to leave because they were having so much fun!
Decorations. We Need NON-SENIOR PARENTS. We have a window of time between 9:00 and 10:30 p.m. when everything must be done. Please call Nancy Worosz at 586-264-8235 to volunteer.
Food serving and drink making! We need some people to man the Tiki hut, make exotic drinks, or help stock the tables. To volunteer contact Pat Raezler at 248-641-3876 or sanibela4@hotmail.com and put SANP in the subject line.
So you want to help, but just can't get to the meetings? How about offering to help by making brownies or cookies? Perhaps you'd like to send in a few bags of chips or donate some soda pop? All help, small or large, is appreciated. Call Susan Pretznow at 248-736-8639 or Janet Grawbowski at 248-642-2676 to let them know how you can help! Thank you!!
This year the SANP committee is looking for donations of gift cards. Because we will be at the Oakland YMCA, we cannot do large items; so, we are looking to give the seniors gift cards to places they could use. Ideas include: gas cards, restaurants, video rental, coffee cards, 7-Eleven (those slurpees go over big). AND you could use SCRIP to order some of these and benefit yourself while benefiting others. Call Denise Katner, SANP Chairman, at 248-379-1706 or Pat Raezler, SANP Co-Chair, at 248-641-3876.
ALSO: CASH DONATIONS WILL BE JOYFULLY RECEIVED!!!
COMING SPRING 2009 new location and new name....details to follow!
We are looking for fresh faces on this committee. Come share your ideas and join in the fun...there are so many of us that the work load gets evenly distributed....besides we have dinner meetings with beverages (if you get my drift). Contact Carrie Vel (Berry in the directory) or Laura Quigley to volunteer!
Have you been spring-cleaning and want to get rid of your treasures now rather than waiting until October? NO PROBLEM!! Kim Davis has donated space in the Rochester Mini Storage. You can contact Kim at the Rochester Mini-Storage at 248-651-3202. And if you have general questions, please contact the chairman, Linda Gawinski, at 586-792-6687.
Vaya Con Dios
It is with great sadness, yet with great appreciation, that I say my farewells to the Northwest family. It was 11 years ago that our oldest son, Adam, stepped through the doors of LHNW. Two years later, our daughter Katie joined him, and the following year, Michael. It was that year when I became Vice-President of the Parent Network. Seven years ago! That seems like a flash as I look back. In those years I saw the north gym added, along with the stage, new library furniture, and kitchen equipment. Then our youngest, Stephanie, began four years ago. More new additions came, lights on the football field, a new "west wing", a new electronic sign, and air conditioning! All these were "things" that the Parent Network helped fund. But all of those things were not the reason for my rejoicing; it was because of our wonderful teachers, administrators, and secretaries that made the building at 1000 Bagley Road - home. I have watched countless athletic events played by our kids and witnessed the football team play for the district championship, the baseball team win the State Championship (son Michael's team). and been a part of a volleyball district championship, two Metro Conference softball championships, and one district championship in softball-all with Stephanie. Accomplishments that our children would not have been part of at a large public school; because frankly, I do not feel they would have made the cut. Still it is not these achievements that make me rejoice. I think of the wonderful people I have worked with over the years in the endless concession seasons, Senior All Night Party Committees for seven years, the Golf Outing Committee dinners, New Student Orientation dinners (especially the one when the power went out!), Parent Network meetings ...the memories are irreplaceable. And still it is not these that make me rejoice. Again, it is the teachers, and Mr. Looker and Mr. McLoughlin who have helped reinforce our family's values and taken stands which mirror ours at home. They showed my children how to work hard, how to study, and how to live a life reflecting the love of Jesus. Yes, it is with great sadness (and many tears as I write this) that I leave, but with thankfulness and love. I know that Northwest and the wonderful friends I have made here over the years will always be in my heart. I love you all, thank you for everything. Vaya Con Dios, Go with God.
Love,
Pat Raezler
PS. Don't be surprised if you see me back next year doing something for the school I love.
Patti Jacques, a mother of a freshman, is heading this very important ministry. This group meets every Friday at 1:40 p.m. in the Lutheran High School Association Board room located across from Mr. Weber's room. (You can use the entrance opposite the girl's softball field off Bagley.... it will save you a lot of walking!) If the time needs to be adjusted, Patti is willing to make changes. Prayer is an awesome means to intercede for the school, its students and families. The results are amazing...why not join up... you can come when your schedule allows.
Are you missing important notices not only from sports news but Parent Network news? Send an email to: LHNWSpiritClub-subscribe@yahoogroups.com and you will become a knowledgeable parent on LNW information. Get in the loop!
It's so easy even I could do it! Go to www.shopwithscrip.com and register as a new participant. The enrollment code for Northwest is DCE49EBE3144. You place your order online. Then you checkout and you can print off a "coupon" of sorts, which you send in to school with your check!
You can save money on tuition and even help the school with this easy continuous fundraiser. Call Debbie Sidelinker at 248-682-6924.
These are also easy ways to help the school. A portion of the profits from these stores is returned to the school. You just need to designate Lutheran High Northwest as your school of choice.
Join us on Monday, May 5 at 7:00 p.m. and WEDNESDAY, June 11, the final meeting of the school year.
